Your first grandchild is a revelation! After all, am I old enough to have a grandchild? Secondly, isn't he beautiful? And then the years pass. I watch him open and close my kitchen cabinet doors, announcing "OPEN! CLOSE!" for hours, it seems. He sits at Grampa's side, teaching him how to use the computer and saying wisely, "Now YOU try it, Grampa!" We sing the songs from Mary Poppins so often that the entire family knows the score by heart! He grows taller. I grow shorter? First Stage becomes a big part of his life. He keeps St. Sebastian's computer systems going with groans and delight He coordinates the first ever state wide student playwright competition as a senior at Pius HS. He begins to arrange and manage adult projects, and he's only 16! He DRIVES down Fairfield Court with Grampa at his side! Working for Welke's House of Roses, he answers to "Now JUNIOR, take care of those garbages!" He's an intern at First Stage...leading him to attend DePaul University with two scholarships, studying theatre management and Catholic studies. He' volunteers in a tough part of the big city, teaching computer skills. We're introduced to serious student theatre productions...he's the house manager. With a beautiful singing voice and much stage presence, he elects not to perform. Why should he when he can 'manage' the whole production? He fills my i-Pod with wondrous songs from Mass at DePaul and with musical comedies! "Training" back and forth from Chicago, we see him much less often. And now, working full time at First Stage, Grampa and I deliver a birthday cake for him to share with his co-workers. It's the 21st cake that I have decorated for Patrick. From choo choo trains through a disastrous "Barney" to stagecraft, it has truly been a labor of love and has been so much fun to mark his growth - - - because you see...Patrick is the frosting on MY cake! xo nanna
You hit a home run with both the cake AND the car accessories! He absolutely loved the cake, and today went off to work with his new maps and stuff. I guess you really "get" him! Thanks!
